Would doubt it's dead in the water, I'm pretty sure that it would be seperate development teams working on the 2 projects, depending on if Notch actually believe that Minecraft is a finished product (which I'd say it can never be, we'll just have to watch this space (also, I see what I did there completely accidentally XD)).

Notch has not actively worked on Minecraft for some time now. Since the 1.0 release at least, the lead designer has been jeb_

hugely accessible casual game with endless possibilities to what looks like a game only a few people will actually understand how to play...

this ends badly i think!
