Vista: Install or set disk alight?

I've had a free OEM copy of Vista (Home Edition) laying around for a while, i've been using XP since beta and i've been debating upgrading for ages now.
I've read up on a silly ammount of forums and the gaming community seems to be pretty split on the issue and i can't find any recent definitive information that puts Vista above XP.

My question is does anyone here use Vista and is there anything else other than DX10 gaming that'd benefit me or shall i hold out for Windows 7?

System specs:

Intel Quad Core Q6600 (oc'd to 2.67 GHz)
4Gb RAM
Powercolor Radeon HD4850 1Gb edition
Asus P5N3E-SLI (yeah it sucks, can't spare the upgrade cash atm)
Soundblaster X-Fi Gamer edition

Personally i would get yourself on the windows 7 beta and get the 64 bit version.

You have a 32bit OS that will not use 100% of your RAM.

Also I am, and have been for the past few months now, runnign windows 7 64. I have had no problems with it.

Yeah i have a copy of the Windows 7 beta, i tried a dual boot and it was ok but i have a policy of never using an OS until its on at least SP1, being a techie i've seen more than my fair share of probs *cough*Vista*cough*

I do want to see about going 64 bit but i keep hearing there are still problems with drivers, is this true or just an industry myth? Plus it'd be nice to use my full complement of RAM.

Cheers for the advice tho

I'm a techy too and I tried Windows 7 on a laptop first to see how it was. Within a week I was using it as my main OS. It is what Vista should have been. Uses less resources. UAC is less intrusive. The new taskbar, I find superb.

I know what you are saying about SP1, but consider Windows 7 to be Vista SP1...but done right.

As for drivers, well I have a fairly standard setup, not to different from yours and I have had no problems with drivers at all. Use Avast as your AV as it is 100% 64bit compatable.

Hmmm, well thats a compelling argument, if you are already using it as your main OS its must be pretty damn good!

I'll have to scout the torrent sites (sorry if thats a dirty word around here) for a x64 version as i have the 32 bit edition and the download period has ended

Think i'll try a dual boot first and take it from there, cheers for the pointers

Awesome, glad to see im amongst fellow kin :)

I like techie because it sounds kinda cool, if i say "i'm a professional SQL geek" at parties people kinda edge slowly away assuming I play WoW and haven't seen day light in years

Not exactly <dramatic pause>

The key is generic. the 32 bit key will work with the 64bit version.

And Someone *points at self* happens to have the dvd iso still ^^

Thats cool man but i already kicked the download off :D should be done in a few hours apparently....
Managed to retrieve my as well key so i think i'm set

Just read that 7 may not be released until Q1 2010 which sucks! Plus the pricing will probably be through the roof on launch. Well i'll test drive and and see how it fairs, mite just try and grab and x64 edition of Vista on the cheap in the mean time to get me through

Good luck with it, if you do have any questions don't be afraid to ask.

As for the pricing of Windows 7.....MSDN is my friend ^^

Possibly Stu, I dunno about that tbh. Either way, as soon as it becomes available on MSDN I will get a copy there ^^

yeah the beta ends the beginning of August? after that its useless, you wont be able to continue using the beta or upgrade to commercial!

I am a geek, its not an insult to me, unless you mean it as an insult (" oh, hes just a geek" ,etc.) use it as an insult and you can fuck off if you think i'm gonna help you when you break your computer!!

As for burning the disc or installing it, aren't they both pretty much the same thing?

we are "Computer Geeks" thats the better term for it , instead of just geek.

No doubt there will be some kind of hack to extend it when the times comes.

I'd love to try 7, got the ISO and a key, but I just don't have time. Vista kinda worked, apart from my random driver problems with my creative Audigy 2 sound card:confused:

Sticking with XP until software companies no longer release new games / drivers for it :)
