XBOX360 wireless controller on PC with W7

Ive upgraded to W7 and now my usb dongle for my wireless XB360 controller doesnt work in vista or w7 - its dead. What controller do you guys use outside the keyboard and mouse and has anyone got the usb dongle to work in w7. Does the wired xbox360 controller work with W7? I know the controller wont work with the plug'n'play charge kit attached to a wireless controller. Also, why would an OS kill a piece of hardware kit like the microsoft wireless receiver for the controller?

Perhaps try downloading the drivers manually from Microsoft ?

Of if the dongle is plugged into an unpowered USB hub, try either putting it into a powered hub or even better, directly into the computer.

the dongle is totally goosed. The light doesnt come on and the pc doesnt "ding" when its inserted in the usb. There are lots of reports of these dongles dying with w7. I bought another from ebay and it was the same.
