Virgin offered good speed but their unlimited package has daily download caps that is written nowhere in the contract.

(I thought the agreement references the above when signing up to virgin)

It's not that much of a problem with me at home @ 30MB Package.. it is however frustrating when you live with people that have no idea what the hell bandwidth is, so they carelessly download films in the early evening.. They don't realise it would be done a lot quicker if they wait a little longer. At my uni house we have the 10MB package, quite harsh caps on that one. :(

Not much of a problem with customer service contrary to other people's experiences, but that's because I'm comparing them to SKY.. Virgin look like customer service gods compared to the guys at SKY...

That's DSL and cable as far as I can tell, the 10Mb/20Mb/30Mb/50Mb packages are (also) cable ones (I don't think they have a 50 DSL package)

Plusnet so far have been absolutely spot on for me.

But beware. Their 60GB cap is quite easily reachable for people like us and once you do it's REALLY slowed down for most traffic. But Skype and VPN are still given full performance regardless.

(Don't even consider anything less than the plusnet pro addon.)

I had considered Virgin but (Surprise!) they don't offer the fiber optic here. I had also briefly thought about sky for the TV deal but according to Dave you're stuck with the router they give you and it's crap...

Zen and plusnet are two options I hadn't even considered. Whats good about Zen?

Zen offer excellent tech support, they have a hard usage cap of 10,50 or 100 gb per month. But their service is totally free of traffic shaping unlike Virgin, Plusnet, BT etc.

Plusnet shape the crap out of your connection even if you go with their pro additions and run a seriously contended and under invested network.

Ive been with zen now for 10 years, they are instant win

I'll also chip in for Zen on the basis as that's the ISP of choice for the Breach Events as well, and as far as their service goes, they have always been good for us!

You do get what you pay for, a service that is fast at any time of the day or night with proper tech support that trust the experienced customer and don't read from a script :)

as in living with the people in my uni house james.. the 10MB virgin package we have is too tight on data allowance for my liking, 1.5GB in the evenings is a little harsh to share between 4 people who actively use the internet.. including a Japanese house-mate, who can only get television from home via the internet.

Today in the evening, one of my housemates downloaded Hard Candy, thinking it was a drama.. At least they were unpleasantly surprised.

Does anybody know if it would be possible to add a seperate phone line to a house? If so, how would one go about doing that?

The plan would be to have 2 phone lines and 2 internet connections, would heavy use on one line slow down the other? Any info would be smashing.

From when i asked talk talk about it is possible to add another plan to a household, this would effectivly double the speed of any internet you have at the moment. You would have to put in a brand new line into the house which can range from £50 to £500.

This cost imediatly put me off... You would also need a another modem.

Cheers coob, i've got a spare modem so that won't be a problem.

I'm just thinking it would be nice to have my own connection so i don't have to share with gemini.

I'll enquire with a few companies and see if i can get a price.

i wouldn't inquire, because, well if i was a provider i wouldn't want to put in a brand new line to a house, so possibly they'll cut corners and splice your existing one, i would check how much it would cost to add a new line into the house, if they ask say its for a business use or something. that's what i would reccomend

You would have to go through the following process:
1. Get BT to install a new Line - in aberdeen I think they are the only ones that will install new lines. Don't go to an ISP direct.
2. Then get a new Internet Service on new line

It WILL be expensive, and you would need to manually switch cables between networks unless you have a load balancing device to bridge networks, you can't just connect the two of them together and expect it to work. Other than that you might have an idea

Would i really need this load balancing device if it's 2 seperate lines? One line would just be used by me and one by greg, wouldn't be looking to combine them or anything.
