READ THREAD BEFORE VOTING

Ladies and Gentlemen.

Following our discussions tonight, this is the initial interest thread for another Insomnia LAN gaming trip.

Insomnia 45 will be held at the Telford International Centre. Currently the dates are set as,

We can't get the Easter events at Telford, so it's going to be 4-7 May 2012. Want to look at filling the huge Nov-May gap with another LAN, but more on that when we start coming up with ideas

S
o - Start checking now.

We plan the dates for BreachLAN based on local holidays and the dates for i-series LAN's. If a huge group of us are going to i45 then we need to know as soon as possible for our planning of BreachLAN event's in 2012.

If you have any questions about the trip, what we have done in the past, how we did transport etc etc then please ask. Don't PM me about it because the chances are if you are unsure, someone else is unsure too.

PLEASE - ONLY RESPOND IF YOU ARE SERIOUS. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO VOTE NOW. YOU CAN VOTE LATER IF YOU NEED TO WAIT FOR ACCURATE INFORMATION.

If you are serious about coming - Then the BEST WAY to do this is by committing early. If you pay for the LAN during the Early Early Bird immediately after i44 then you can get your admission, including Early Arrival Service (Essential) for £65. AND this helps me begin the organisation of mass transport for us.

I am VERY INTERESTED in talking to you if you are considering coming, AND you have a full driving licence and your own vehicle. I am EXTREMELY interested in talking to you if you got your driving licence BEFORE January 1997 and/or you have the right to drive class D1 vehicles

These are the rules applied at Insomnia LAN's which may well affect your decision if you want to go.

Early Arrival Service.

I-series officially begins at 9am on the Friday. But for £15 extra you can get in on Thursday evening.

THIS IS ESSENTIAL FOR ALL OF US.

Designed for people travelling long distances, you NEED to have EAS to get into the campsite or to get your computer in from the cars / bus. (Natch you don't want to keep these in your hotel / tent for the first night)

Sleeping

Sleeping is a big deal at the I-Series. Sleeping in the main lan hall is not permitted under any circumstances. This is a health and safety rule so there is no flexability given.

You NEED to either sleep in the camping area or a hotel. You MUST take your own tent or book one of the accommodation options provided on site.

File sharing

File sharing is strictly prohibited. And it isn’t just paid lip service. It is genuinely forbidden and those who do not obey are automatically booted from the network.

In order to preventfalling foul of this rule, you need to disable ALL shares on your computer. Including Limewire, BitTorrent, DC++ etc etc.

Dual monitors

Strictly not allowed due to space and power concerns. Only take one monitor.

Other information you should be aware of

Unfotunately, over the past few events there have been a small number of thefts from theLAN. Including laptops. Multiplay offer no protection for your equipment. Security on site is tasked with looking after YOU. Not your computer, so if something gets nicked they will not help you.

I STRONGLY ADVISE that you take ALL the following precautions to minimise the risk of youbecoming a victim.
  1. Buy a security lock for your computer / monitor / laptop and have it attached AT ALL TIMES.
  2. Cable tie all your peripherals together. Use a cable tie to tie your mouse / keyboard / headphones to your security cable. I’l be taking a bundle so don’t worry about getting your own.
  3. NOCD crack all your games. Don’t take your games inside. Leave them locked in the car. Make sure everything you have installed is patched, then NOCD cracked.
  4. Don’t leave valuables (wallet, phone, car keys) on your desk, or in your tent.
  5. Lock your PC when you leave it. It infuriates me that someone might do it, but it does happen. People find unlocked PC’s and play pranks with them. I know its disrespectful and nasty, but that’s the way it is.
  6. DO NOT save your steam account password. Type it in every time you login.

Thou Shalt Not Pass
As said on mumble, very interested, Just need to get the permission to take that time off work.

On the proviso that I can get the time off, of one person who is driving down, would I be able to be picked up from Edinburgh (Have license, no car)

I'm working on that Harry. If there is a big group (10+) and we can get someone with D1 licence then minibus is a viable option.

I got the quote back for the Minibus today. The cost of renting a 15 seater minibus is

Thursday - Monday - £650
Thursday - Tuesday - £780

So we would basically have to fill the bus with 15 people for it to become financially worthwhile. Something that's possible but unlikely. And that's not factoring in the cost of fuel. The cost of hiring the bus along would be between £45 and £73 per person, BEFORE we factor in fuel (I'm waiting on the expected MPG)

With three people to a car I would expect the fuel bill to be around £80 per person.

***EDIT***

I've got the MPG quote from the rental company. The bus would get anywhere between 18 and 25MPG on the motorway.

Assuming we go 950 miles, it means that to do the journey under the best case scenario would cost £250 in diesel and worst case almost £360 of diesel. Factoring in the cost of bus rental, the cost would be as follows.

Number of people on busDay of departure from LANPotential Cost (Per Person)
10Monday£90 - £101
10Tuesday£98 - £109
12Monday£75 - £85
12Tuesday£82 - £91
14Monday£65 - £73
14Tuesday£70 - £78

As you can see, the cost of taking a minibus is probably going to be greater than the cost of three people to a car. Plus we are left with the massive downside of having only one vehicle while we are down there, as opposed to potentially having four or five people with cars.

And given that Dex and Fay have already excluded themselves from the bus, it's unlikely that we will be able to take a minubus.

UNLESS - Someone is able to find a minibus for significantly lower rates than £130 a day. If you can help on this front then please get in touch.

For now, if you are thinking of coming, you should be generous and consider approximately £100 a fair contribution to your drivers fuel bill. Use £100 as your transport cost if you are trying to work out how much the whole thing will cost.

If we were going to i45 it'd be in a car as we would be seeing family at the same time and travelling down a week before or staying a week after :)

I got the MPG quote from the rental company. Check post #10 for a breakdown.

Wow would be an extremely expensive weekend esp considering the price of entry tickets and accommodation assuming people don't camp

Dex and I would offer to give a lift but it could only be on a one way basis i'm afraid :(

Ye it's not a cheap event to go to. I'm going to post a more detailed cost breakdown soon once there are five or so people confirmed as being interested.
