Death of the lan ?

Talk about doom and gloom, I personally think that there is certainly a reduced choice of games but I'm yet to see this high speed Internet connection! Infact in real world terms 8meg today is actually 512k. Massive unoptimised Web sites, massive downloadable games, etc.

We are not going anywhere, although I think that the days of a non Internet connected party are pretty much over. The choice of games still exists and let's face it we all enjoy the social aspect of a long party. Not sure i could find the energy to throw a one day event

Well, I hope BreachLAN isn't going anywhere soon!

The lack of LAN support really does feel like laziness on a lot of developers parts. Also the d**k move that some developers pull on people with hardly workable internet speeds is a joke (Titanfall, i'm looking at you!). Having "Superfast" internet is a joke unless you live in town.

I don't think the LAN has declined as such in the past 10+ years I've been going to them and they've not really changed all that much. Thinking back to the early days of Scotlan there was gaming, UT, Q3, HLDM etc, there was drinking (of the alcoholic and non-alcoholic type) and there was pizza. And let's not forget the file sharing...shhh....

Socialising was also a large point of it, yes you could play games over the internet with your flashy 56k modems, and hope to not get disconnected when the phone rang, but the joy of the lan was gaming without the high pings or frequest disconnections, you got to see your opponent face to face and hurl some friendly abuse. We may now have high speed internet connections with low ping gaming at home (well some of us at least ;) ) but being able to meet people face to face you've only talked to over the internet is a great part of going to LAN.

I think as long as there is always people willing to get together the LAN will survive.

I think only when people stop wanting to see each other in person or when more people find less free time on their hands will LAN parties ever die. The author of that article claims that CSGO is the last he's played, but there a fair amount of modern or enjoyable lan games to play, and that's disregarding non steam games like gang beasts (which might be on steam now) or console set up tournaments like FIFA, Super Smash Bros or Mortal Kombat.

In that article far too much emphasis was put on the types of games and how they're played and not why they're played. Unless you're a really terrible person I don't think any of us have gone to a LAN with prime reason to experience lag free competitive play; I hope I don't speak for just myself when I say we go to meet, greet and be merry with each other in a way that is impossible to do over mumble.

Decent lan FPS games might be dying. But that's only because the large number of lan timeless classics (CS, UT, Quake, TF2, ect) are seriously hard to beat in terms of competitive balance, quality and fun.

For the record, and to sum up my feelings about that article, I've often found "polygon opinion" is synonymous with "polygon baiting for comment"
