So they've announced that they've started developing Unreal Tournament 4, which is going to be free. No purchase, no micro-transactions, no pay to win, completely free.

No console launch planned, made using Unreal Engine 4 and lots of modding support. Sounds like a recipe for success. If the requirements to run it aren't too high it could be good for future LANs.

The engine that it's built on, UE4. They licence it to studios for $LOL.

Think of it like the BF series. BF3 was just a Frostbite 2 (BF4 was Frostbite 3) engine demo. Except EA/DiCE have the balls to charge stupid amounts of money for engine demos.

They're going to have a steam-community style store which will sell user mods, a portion of revenue will go to Epic. Of course as castiana says, UT has often been used as a sales pitch for their engine, but I think in this case UT is coming quite a bit later than the actual engine.

Summary of the new UT can also be found here: https://wiki.unrealengine.com/Unreal_Tournament

The really cool thing is they have found a way to make moderate a game's development for free(ish) and ensure it's success via open development. It's like crowdfunding investment done with interest instead of cash, but we might actually see a good game come out of it.* As some of you know, i'm a massive fan of Arena / Competitive FPS, so I'll be signing up interest in the project.

*This statement is harsh and probably unfair, having said that the only crowd funded game I can bring to mind that's actually any good is Kerbal Space Program.

It's a Win/Win - free labour in the guise of a collaboration and quite honestly - I fucking trust Epic. They are stalwarts of the PC and LAN gaming scene... It makes me want to learn UDK just to help out.
